How To Apply Vinyl With A Butt Join

How To: Apply Vinyl with a Butt Row Join

When installing architectural vinyl wrap, a butt join or butt row is used when the surface area exceeds the width of a single sheet. Instead of overlapping the material, the two sections are carefully aligned so their edges meet precisely. This results in a smooth, continuous finish with no visible step or overlap.

How to apply architectural vinyl with a butt join:

  1. Prepare two vinyl sheets by cutting a long strip into the backing paper.
  2. Remove the larger piece of backing paper from the vinyl.
  3. Apply the first sheet of vinyl to the prepared one with the remaining paper backing facing the centre.
  4. Apply the second sheet of vinyl to the surface with the paper backing overlapping the paper backing on the first sheet.
  5. Snap the blade on your craft knife to ensure that you are using a sharp edge. Using your ruler and a craft knife, cut through both sheets of vinyl. Cut at a 90 degree angle while pressing hard.
  6. Remove the excess film and paper backing.
  7. Ensure that the edges of the film closest to you are together.
  8. Use the plastic side of a wrapping squeegee to push the vinyl flat.
  9. Steer the squeegee towards the lifted vinyl for the best result.
