Midcomp has been appointed as the sole distributor for Durst in South Africa. Durst SA will be incorporated into Midcomp and Midcomp will offer the full range of Durst products, from graphics, sign, display and wide format to labelling solutions.

Durst printing systems offer reliability, speed and outstanding colour reproduction that has been perfected through decades of expertise and cutting-edge technology. Durst offers specific ink sets for its printing systems, based on UV or water based technology. These inks provide high system stability, low ink consumption, a large colour gamut, and a broad range of applications. Durst also provides smart and easy-to-use software solutions to optimise the printing process.

Midcomp Group CEO, Rob Makinson, explained that Midcomp were approached by Durst late last year to form a partnership to further their interests in Southern Africa: ‘Midcomp’s team was built around implementing and supporting industrial digital printers but the portfolio unfortunately dwindled to a fantastic offering of low and mid-range printers. We have long sought to be a relevant player in the industrial segment and we can think of no better partner than Durst. They unquestionably are the leaders in their field.’

Makinson said that there is already a significant install base of Durst products in South Africa. As such, Midcomp are not introducing the brand to the market, but simply solidifying it with a new foundation for growth. They are doing this in conjunction with the existing players responsible for Durst sales and support in South Africa.

He added that Wayne Barker, Chris Lever and Erich Ludick from Durst SA are all now part of the Midcomp team effective July 1 2025. ‘They bring all of the necessary support and sales skills, and most importantly the customer relationships. We could not do this without them and we look forward to the upcoming integration,’ said Makinson.

‘This is a very exciting time for Midcomp. To be back in the industrial space where we belong, and where we excel in customer support, is a welcome challenge. We look forward to continued growth with the Durst team and products,’ he added.

‘The entire Durst portfolio excites us, but in particular the newly released P5 X flatbed/hybrid printer is of particular interest. Their fully automated solutions for the packaging industry are also of huge interest,’ said Makinson.

Aligning Global Expertise With Local Insights

Markus Gleissner, Managing Director for the graphics division at Durst, covering the Eastern Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EEMEA) regions, said that working with Midcomp enhances Durst’s ability to provide localised expertise and service excellence: ‘Their in-depth knowledge of the regional market allows us to tailor our offerings and ensure seamless support to customers. Moreover, this partnership helps us deliver quicker turnaround times for service and spare parts — not just in South Africa, but across neighbouring countries as well. By aligning global expertise with local insights, we’re able to deliver exceptional value and performance to end users.’

Customers working with Durst and Midcomp benefit from: faster response times thanks to local presence and support infrastructure; expert consultation from professionals who understand regional dynamics; tailored solutions that address specific market requirements; and increased reliability through ongoing service and technical support.

This collaborative ecosystem ensures that customers can operate efficiently, reduce downtime, and get the most out of their investment in Durst technology.

South Africa’s Role In Durst’s Strategy

‘South Africa plays a key role in our EEMEA growth strategy, particularly in sectors such as wide format graphics, labels, and packaging,’ added Gleissner. ‘We see substantial opportunities for innovation, especially in corrugated packaging and high-quality on-demand printing solutions. Our close collaboration with Midcomp is instrumental in supporting the local market with advanced technology and dependable service infrastructure.’

Durst’s Priorities And Vision

‘Innovation, sustainability and customer enablement lie at the heart of Durst’s strategy,’ continued Gleissner. ‘We’re investing in next-generation digital printing systems that emphasise precision, automation, and performance. We also remain firmly committed to environmentally responsible practices — reducing material waste, enhancing energy efficiency, and enabling greener production workflows. Our broader mission is to help customers accelerate their growth, improve efficiency, and realise their business objectives through integrated hardware, software, and service solutions.’
