‘Extensive material tests, cutting samples, and a professional demonstration sealed the deal in favour of Zünd. We finalised the ideal configuration in terms of table size and tooling. In September 2023, the quote was approved. Delivery and installation took place at the beginning of 2024. Live production started immediately after the five days of installation and training.’
From Lengthy Outsourcing To Saving Time With The Zünd G3 L-3200

Chris van Wyk, head of manufacturing at Cecil Nurse said, ‘We started developing office partitioning and acoustic products, using 9mm thick recycled PET sheets. At that time, we outsourced the cutting of the sheets to another company in Cape Town. It took as long as three weeks to have components cut, making product development difficult and pushing lead times out,’ he explained. Any change to a design also took at least three weeks, so having our own machine really sped up the prototyping and development process.’
‘The lead time on our polyester products are the lowest of all our products because of the Zünd G3 L-3200. We can control our quality, as Cecil Nurse is ISO 9001 quality assurance certified. When it’s an outsourced operation, there’s a lengthy procedure that comes into play, where each component needs to be inspected. Now with the digital cutter, this process is eliminated.’
He explained that PET is a type of plastic used to make water bottles. Old water bottles can be recycled and turned into a type of yarn. The yarn is then put through a felting process, after which a PET or polyester sheet is created, which is like felt – much like the old traditional pinboards. ‘It also has acoustic properties. We use the Zünd G3 L-3200 for cutting these sheets in the required components,’ added van Wyk.

Van Wyk said the Zünd G3 L-3200 gave the company the opportunity to develop the product quickly and to be the first in the market with a new range of products.

Through research overseas, van Wyk and his team learnt that Zünd is the Rolls Royce of digital cutting machines. Additionally, it was determined that a Zünd machine’s maintenance is very low. ‘We have already experienced this in our first service, which was really not expensive,’ said van Wyk.
‘This machine is the most expensive machine we’ve ever bought, but probably the best investment we’ve ever made. Unlike other machines, the Zünd G3 L-3200 has not broken down once – it’s that reliable.’
