The company has launched the SmartApps VehicleWraps Plug-in for Adobe Illustrator Software which simplifies and accelerates the set-up of vehicle wraps for wide format printing. The product gives users the ability to combine design and paneling of vehicle wraps within one application to streamline print production and finishing.

SmartApps VehicleWraps is the newest addition to the SmartApps line of products focusing on wide format plug-ins for design applications.

‘Lack of preparation tools available today force print service providers producing vehicle wraps to fragment their design and prep workflow, significantly increasing turnaround times,’ said Kevin Murphy, President and CEO of ONYX Graphics, Inc. ‘The SmartApps VehicleWraps plug-in simplifies and combines design and preparation to create a more cost-efficient and productive workflow in an application that is already familiar to them.’

Reduce file preparation time and costs

Designers using Adobe Illustrator software to create vehicle wraps have access to easy-to-use tools including third-party vehicle templates for image and text placement. However, they lack the proper tools to prepare print-ready panels for the RIP. When the file arrives at the print station, production staff must then utilise generic tiling tools in the RIP to prepare panels for printing. Tiling functionality in RIP software is not specific to vehicle wrapping and may not provide tools needed to edit individual tile overlaps and bleeds, name each tile, or create tiles for windows and body panels at the same time. The result is often a dual overlap: a duplication of effort for both the designer and print production staff, plus added back-and-forth communication – all of which increases preparation time and creates a more error-prone workflow.

The SmartApps VehicleWraps plug-in provides designers with the necessary tools from within the design programme that help eliminate the overlap and streamline production. Designers can easily specify necessary set-up items such as tiles and bleeds so when the print production staff receives the file, no additional preparation is necessary.

In addition, the SmartApps VehicleWraps plug-in can help reduce overhead costs by decreasing the time spent preparing vehicle wraps for print. Reduced media costs can also be realised with the ability to individually edit bleeds and overlaps for each panel.

Streamline installation

Lack of proper tools to facilitate communication between print service providers and installers can make it difficult for installers to know exactly where each panel should be placed and is a common reason for redoing a print job. The SmartApps VehicleWraps plug-in offers tools to create tile maps to easily communicate panel placement and print names on each panel to help identify them. This feature simplifies communication, helps streamline installation and greatly reduces the risk of a job reprint.

SmartApps: RIP-independent and platform-friendly

The SmartApps VehicleWraps plug-in is the third in the new SmartApps toolset that help cut production time and costs by optimizing workflow using existing design applications. Designed to help those who prepare files for wide format printing, SmartApps plug-ins are application-specific, operating system independent (can be used on Macintosh® or Windows® platforms), easy to use and affordably priced. They are complementary to any wide format RIP software – ONYX® RIP software is not required to use the plug-ins.

The SmartApps VehicleWraps plug-in will be available in May 2012 with the ability to evaluate it as a 30-day full-version trial. For more information, visit www.smartappsplugins.com/vehiclewraps.

Antalis McNaughton unveiled its Coala range of commodity, speciality and environmentally-friendly Large Format Printing (LFP) products at Sign & Digital UK.

The Coala collection includes 20 products for water-based ink and 54 for solvent, UV and latex ink. It provides printers with the versatility and performance they need to deliver premium quality print jobs to end customers, under a single brand.

The collection contains substrates for both indoor and outdoor applications including a broad range of papers, self-adhesives, banners, textiles, wallpapers and speciality media. Particular attention has been paid to the development of products for latex ink.

The Coala collection has been sourced from leading European suppliers, primarily from Germany, that have undergone a rigorous selection process. Only those suppliers offering optimum performance combined with value-for-money and market relevant products have been selected.

Strong environmental credentials were also an important consideration and Coala includes a large selection of PVC-free products such as films, textiles and FSC or PEFC certified papers.

Richard Champion, Marketing Director at Antalis McNaughton said, ‘This launch underlines the importance Antalis McNaughton places in the international development of its sign and display activities, a key area of commitment for the company going forward.’

Coala is also one of the cornerstones of Antalis McNaughton’s Digital-to-Business (d2b) initiative. This initiative aims to help customers leverage the many business opportunities provided by the emergence of highly innovative digital technologies and applications.

The visual communications market is currently growing year-on-year with the flexible media segment in particular demonstrating enormous potential. This potential is linked to the diversity of substrates that can be used (paper, vinyl, adhesives, film, textiles etc.), the ease of application and therefore the quick return on investment for printers investing in LFP machines. The Coala collection will allow printers to leverage this potential and boost their profitability. Antalis McNaughton will continue to work with suppliers to extend the collection even further with new, innovative media.

Spirit Displays, the London-based manufacturer of banner tensioning systems, has launched Spirit-TEX, which has been developed in response to market demand for sturdy, easy-to-use frame solutions for lightweight textiles, and is designed to address challenging sizing and finishing issues.
The innovative textile tensioning system, which has a patent pending, is the only system to offer a choice of three finishing options for the printed fabric, allowing users to reduce or even eliminate the need for finishing. Available in a number of profiles, including wall-mounting, free-standing and back-lit, Spirit-TEX has also been successfully tested for compatibility with dye-sublimation, UV-curable and latex printing systems, making it one of the most flexible fabric display options on the market.
Of the several mounting options, a combination of industry-standard silicone strip application across the top edge of a printed graphic and Spirit Displays’s innovative Spirit-TEX Gripper along the sides and bottom edges offers the best of both worlds. Allowing for easy alignment with a limited amount of finishing to the textile, this method also ensures optimal tension coupled with the maximum tolerance for size variation.
With Spirit-TEX Gripper on all edges of the frame, fabric can be printed with a bleed area and the edges tucked into the frame using the Spirit-TEX tool without any further finishing being necessary. This not only removes the issue of precise sizing of the printed fabric – a complex area made more complicated by the typical shrinkage of these substrates after washing – but also allows much larger textile graphics to be tensioned. An 18 x 3m (59 x 9’10”) frame has already been successfully installed at exclusive London department store Selfridges, and there is potential to go larger still.
Alternatively, TEX-TAPE from Spirit Displays can be affixed to the perimeter of the printed textile to reinforce the edge. The double-sided tape with textile adhesive does not require any special tools or training to use, and can be used in place of silicone strip. The Spirit-TEX system is also compatible with industry-standard 14 x 3mm silicone keder.
In addition to being simple to assemble and enormously flexible, the Spirit-TEX profiles are completely recyclable, making them a truly green solution for fabric display mounting, and are manufactured in the UK. The full range of profiles comprises options for front- or back-lighting and single- or double-sided display, and the frames can hang, or be wall-mounted or freestanding. Spirit-TEX and the popular Spirit-FLEX systems from Spirit Displays are available to the trade only in stock profiles and flat-pack kits, or fully fabricated with LED lighting in the case of light boxes.
Hadley Weight, director at Spirit Displays says, ‘The industry has been crying out for a simple, flexible display solution for lightweight fabrics, and we have listened. We are proud to be the first to respond to the demand with Spirit-TEX and we are confident that it will become the most popular product of its kind on the market.’
Spirit Displays manufactures and distributes tensioning systems for banners and fabric graphics, and has been trading in the UK since 2003, when Hadley and Alistair Weight brought the popular Spirit-FLEX Tensioning System to the European market from South Africa. Using London as a base to venture into the EU and other international markets, Spirit Displays has seen a steady increase in the use of its tensioned banner systems and continues to develop further variants and create bespoke solutions for the installation of all wide to superwide-format banners.
