Marabu Group Expands Its Textile Printing Footprint With ICON Inks Acquisition

The purchase of ICON Inks allows Marabu to expand its addressable segments to include textile printing, increase its international footprint, extend its product portfolio and further strengthen customer service and centricity.

‘We have high hopes for this acquisition,’ stated Jon Bultemeyer, Executive Vice President, Business Unit Screen and Pad Printing Inks. ‘We are always looking to identify segments with strong future prospects. Until recently, our focus had consciously not included textiles. But the market environment is very dynamic and it is important that our business is broadly based.

Textile printing remains one of the largest global screen printing segments. ICON Inks is a leading brand and this acquisition gives us access to new markets and new skills. ICON Inks has a high profile in Asia and is a valuable addition to our existing Marabu ink offering. By expanding our product portfolio, we are now able to offer screen printing inks for textiles, in addition to our pad printing solutions.’

In 2020, Marabu launched its pioneering Maqua® Pad MAP ink. This premium-quality solution is the world’s first water-based pad printing ink. ICON Inks products are an ideal addition to the existing portfolio and will help Marabu extend its focus on water-based products and expand its textile printing footprint.

As Bultemeyer said, ‘Textile printing is an exciting field for us. Inks vary by type, depending on the use case. They can be based on water, solvent, plastisol or silicone.’

Current ICON Inks products are employed by many leading manufacturers, predominantly in Asia. Marabu will initially continue to offer the existing portfolio unchanged, so ICON Inks customers can be sure of consistently reliable quality. However, Marabu plans to make the product offering global.

SloanLED Announces Dimmable And Non-Dimmable Power Supplies For LED Sign Lighting Applications

SloanLED has unveiled new compact power supply for sign applications, designed with sustainability in mind.

The 60C3 is SloanLED’s most versatile and compact power supply solution for LED sign lighting applications, maintaining the same quality and reliability customers have come to expect, in an even smaller form factor for greater flexibility and ease of installation.

The 60C3 is available in dimmable and non-dimmable versions with wide-ranging universal input voltage — from 120-277 VAC — and UL recognition for damp/dry locations. Active power conversion improves reliability and energy efficiency over current offerings.

60C3 works with all SloanLED 12 VDC LED sign products and is designed specifically with sign installers in mind, incorporating innovations that speed installation and reduce labour cost while delivering a smaller size without relying on the sign as a heat sink for the driver. It eliminates the need to replace fuses or reset a circuit breaker by auto resetting after an electrical short is corrected. Secondary hook-ups are easy and do not require a minimum load, dip switches or load balancing.

‘Reducing labour, maintenance and energy costs for our customers is a top priority,’ said Barry Blythe, Director of Sign Product Solutions at SloanLED. ‘SloanLED’s proven reliability and investments in power supply technology ensure that the 60C3 will significantly decrease those costs.’

Neschen’s New Book Protection Film Made From Bio-Based Sugar Cane Components

Like filmolux® libre organic, filmolux® soft organic is made of bio-based polyethylene obtained from the renewable raw material sugar cane. Sugar cane is a versatile and rapidly renewable plant that can be used, for example, as a clean source of energy or as a raw material for the production of book protection film.

After harvesting, bio-ethanol is extracted from the sugar cane, which binds CO2 from the atmosphere in every growth cycle and is used to produce green polyethylene (bio-PE). This helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional polyethylene, which is made from fossil resources and significantly improves the eco-balance.

In addition, it has the same application and performance properties as petrochemical polyethylene. Filmolux® soft organic is made from bio-PE, which consists of more than 90 percent renewable raw materials.

Filmolux® soft organic has an antibacterial effect and thus supports the effectiveness of hygiene concepts in libraries (tested according to ISO 22196 by the independent testing institute QualityLabs).

The new book protection film is REACH-compliant and therefore also APEO and BPA-free, and it can be easily bonded to all smooth surfaces. Furthermore, the adhesive and the film are plasticiser-free. You can correct minor errors quickly during processing due to its reduced initial adhesion. The printed grid on the 100% recyclable PE film also makes it easy to cut to size.

Design And Manufacturing Company Sees Immediate Benefits With Zünd Cutter

As a contract manufacturer, Integra is faced with processing a wide variety of upholstery materials, including leather, vinyls and fabrics with many types of backers and stretch properties. The company now boosts throughput, material yield and quality consistency with a Zünd G3 2XL-3200 and MindCUT.

Located in southern Wisconsin, Integra, Inc., has been designing and manufacturing seating and tables for lounge and reception areas for nearly four decades. ‘Prior to purchasing the Zünd cutter, we were manufacturing the old-fashioned way — manually —using hand-traced paper patterns and cutting stack materials with a 20.3cm (8”) straight blade and a rotating hand cutter for single plies,’ said company president Greg Scharnott.

After reviewing several auto-cutting solutions, Integra selected a Zünd G3 cutting system with MindCut software. Besides being located less than an hour away, the company felt Zünd simply provided the best solution for pattern cutting.

In keeping with its brand motto, Integra is proud to provide top-quality products and superior customer service. The company has doubled the size of its manufacturing facility in the past two years. According to Scharnott, Zünd has continued to be a key part of the company’s growth model, ‘The Zünd team has been great to work with. Our partnership continues to expand with additional equipment features such as pattern matching that support Integra’s growth plan through technology solutions.’

Printing SA Announces Further Industry Updates For July

The Department of Employment and Labour is currently consulting with various sectors and will be finalising their proposal to set the Employment Equity (EE) Sector Target.

For Printing SA to make a fair representation on behalf of its members, it requires their urgent input on Circular EE003. Please read the important contents of this Circular EE003 and submit your responses by no later than 20 July 2021 to Khanyi Ntanzi:

On 6 July 2021, the Department of Employment and Labour (DoEL) invited the manufacturing of wood and product of wood, furniture, cork, articles of straw, plaiting materials, paper and paper products sub-sector to discuss the setting of Employment Equity (EE) Sector Target. This follows a previous consultation meeting held on 26 May 2021 with the manufacturing of printing, publishing and reproduction of recorded media sub-sector.

The Employment Equity Amendment Bill requires the minister to consult with economic sectors when setting numerical targets to achieve employment equity. The consultation with all relevant stakeholders within sectors was the call from businesses because allowing the minister to impose such targets without significant consultation will result in a one-size-fits-all approach. If you had already made responses to the first request, you are not required to make any additional responses.

Metamark Digital Print Media Used For Truck Fleet

Metamark MD5-B was used in a project by OPG, a sign and fleet graphics producer headquartered in Scotland, to brand trucks for Greggs.

Greggs’ relationship with OPG has its basis in the OPG design team working with Greggs’ creative people to leverage the company’s assets and achieve the impact that sustains the powerful brand. Once OPG’s design flats and press proofs are approved by Greggs, OPG is commissioned to wrap its Greggs fleet vehicles, including its 15.6m longer semis and refrigerated trucks.

Both Greggs and OPG take environmental stewardship very seriously and, for some time, OPG has been using HP hardware running substantially water-based, fade-resisting Latex inks. OPG is a recognised HP Trained Printing Company also recognised for its colour management expertise as a GMG Colour Management House. This all has a very positive impact when it comes to examining results.

So too does the specification of Metamark materials for Greggs’ liveries. The liveries are printed on Metamark MD5-B one of Metamark’s MD-Class digital print media. The distinctive matte lustre finish Greggs chooses is imparted by the MD5-B’s matching MG-702 laminate. This proven media-hardware partnership showcases the potency of Greggs’ creative and OPG’s skills brilliantly.
