Fujifilm South Africa announced the winners and runners-up of its Design Challenge at the FESPA Africa And Sign Africa Expo on 15 September. Entrants were required to submit a design for a number of different categories using the Acuity LED 1600 II’s unique features creatively.

The Grand Prize winner was Rowan Maher from Xanita. The substrate was Matte SAV applied to 16mm white Xanita Board, and the Acuity LED 1600 II feature incorporated was CMYK raised seven times.

‘The Design Challenge was a great opportunity to showcase our products and how they can be applied in the real world,’ said Maher. ‘Our company recently moved offices, and I wanted to create a unique interior design with a realistic wood grain feel. The raised print adds to the 3D effect of the design. It’s incredible to see how a light flat paperboard can be converted to resemble a heavy wooden beam through the art of printing and CNC cutting.’
The results are as follows:

Interior Design
First: Rowan Maher, Xanita.
Second: Johan Fourie, USS Graphics.

Retail Environment
First: John and Della Stapleton, Luminao.
Second: Monique Lamprecht, Level Up Design.
Third: Ryan Mipata, Associated Printers Zambia.
Free category
First place: Michael Mahan, Associated Printers Zambia.
Second: Lettie Moolman, Creatiff Corp.
Third: Lingo Mazibuko, L2 Concepts.

Visitors to the FESPA Africa and Sign Africa expo could also vote for their favourite design, the top three of which were given meal vouchers. In first place was Monique Lamprecht from Level Up Design.
The designs incorporated the unique features of the LED 1600 II, including:
• Two or three-layer one-pass printing: simultaneous two or three-layer printing with colour, white and clear inks provides the ability to produce high value creative prints. Print colour-white-colour layers in one pass for two-sided images on transparent materials.
• Emboss effect: LED UV cures the ink instantly so there is no need to wait for the print to dry before finishing or shipping. This technology enables you to print multiple layers: you can print an imaged raised up to nine times
• Heat sensitive materials: LED UV lamps use a fraction of the energy of conventional curing systems, which means you can work with heat-sensitive media without deformation, saving you money on power consumption and substrates.
• Added value with clear and white inks: clear ink offers the luxury to highlight or enhance print with high-gloss spot finishes. High density white ink can be used to produce creative effects on clear and coloured media. Colours, white and clear inks can be printed simultaneously.
• Print directly on to roll or rigid: quick switch between roll and rigid printing. Flatbed feed and receive tables are used for printing rigid media. It supports substrates up to 1610mm wide and can print on rigid sheet substrates up to 13mm thick.
• Print on coloured materials: high density white inks and multiple layer print enables Acuity LED 1600 II users to print vibrant images on a wide range of coloured substrates and achieve high value special effects.
