Epson Earns Platinum Rating For Sustainability

Epson has earned a platinum rating for sustainability from EcoVadis. France-based EcoVadis provides an independent, trusted and common platform for evaluating and rating more than 65,000 groups and companies across 200 industries in 160 countries.

They do this by using Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) assessment criteria that are based on the sustainability standards of thousands of external sources such as NGOs, labour unions, international organisations, local governments and auditing organisations. The platinum rating, which was established in 2020, indicates that Epson was ranked among the top 1% of companies in the industry. Epson had received a gold rating the previous three years. Gold is awarded to companies that score in the top 5% of companies evaluated.

The platinum rating was awarded in recognition of Epson’s global CSR initiatives. The EcoVadis assessment focuses on four themes: the environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement. Epson received an ‘Outstanding’ (the highest score) for the environment, as well as high scores for sustainable procurement, labour and human rights, and ethics, putting it in the top 1% in the computer and peripherals manufacturing industry.

‘Sustainability is a core management strategy for Epson, so the fact that we received a Platinum rating after three consecutive years of Gold ratings is an honour and has tremendous value. As stated in the Epson Group’s Management Philosophy, our goal is to make Epson an indispensable company for our customers and society. We believe that actions that demonstrate good governance and social responsibility across our supply chain are essential elements for achieving this goal. The whole group will work together to further advance the technologies that will make our products and services more efficient, compact and precise so that we may contribute to solutions to societal issues across Epson’s value chain and help to realise a sustainable world,’ said Epson President Yasunori Ogawa.

Epson has identified six materialities, including ‘advancing the frontiers of industry’ and ‘achieving sustainability in a circular economy,’ and is currently working to deliver products and services that contribute to social sustainability. The company is leveraging its efficient, compact and precision technologies to drive innovations in four areas, including inkjet. Epson believes that its technology can help to shrink environmental impacts, increase productivity, and play a major role in solving societal issues and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.

Drytac Graphics Transform City Space

Ollywood used Drytac Polar Street FX to create a new floor graphic in Birmingham’s busy Brindleyplace, a project that required durability and safety on wet surfaces.

A popular meeting point in an area of the city packed with offices and corporate spaces, Brindleyplace is undergoing a campaign to encourage people to ‘#RediscoverBrindley’ following Covid-19 restrictions. Avison Young, a global real estate advisor managing the project, commissioned Newport-based Ollywood to print and install the floor display. As well as grabbing attention, the 35m long floor graphic serves to direct pedestrians to nearby restaurants and attractions including the Ikon Gallery and Sea Life aquarium.

In addition to requiring the durability to withstand heavy foot traffic including high heels, the floor graphic had to be securely installed between two water features. Ollywood, which has worked with Avison Young on several other projects across the UK, sought advice from its media supplier Soyang to find a material that could do the job.

‘Soyang recommended Drytac Polar Street FX for its slip rating and for its durability on surfaces that get wet,’ commented Oliver Williams, Managing Director, Ollywood. ‘Floor graphics are quite common at the moment to promote social distancing, but I’ve noticed many that are peeling, they’re not made for long-term outdoor use.

‘Polar Street FX is priced slightly higher than other floor media but it is better – it does the job it’s meant to. Because it’s aluminium-based it’s more durable than vinyl and Drytac is stricter than other brands about slip ratings.’

Drytac Polar Street FX is a 250µ (10 mil) textured printable white matte aluminium film, coated on one side with a high-tack adhesive for safety and security in public environments. It has been designed to be non-slip and scuff-resistant without the need for lamination, making it perfect for fast-turnaround outdoor floor graphics jobs.

The installation in Birmingham took place in October – just eight weeks after the initial site visit and concept discussions – but the Ollywood team overcame the difficult conditions. ‘The application of floor graphics is always tricky on cold, wet days,’ said Williams, ‘but the Polar Street FX went down perfectly, even alongside the water features. We take care over our preparation but it’s worth taking the time.’

Aleyant Announces Feature Enhancements For Print Management System

Subscribers can now upload production files and support files separately in the Edit Job and Manage Job screens, and in the Estimate screen. These are part of Aleyant’s significant feature enhancements within PrintJobManager for subscribers with tFlow integrations.

PrintJobManager now contains areas to separately upload Production files and Support files. Production files are the job’s primary PDF art file. Support files can be any other related file associated with that job such as distribution lists, fonts, native files, etc. In addition, only Production files will sync and create new job(s) in tFlow.

Previously, there was one upload area, and all files uploaded to PrintJobManager or Pressero created new jobs in tFlow. With this release, only Production files create new jobs in tFlow.

In addition to improving how PrintJobManager and tFLOW work together, this enhancement also improves file management for PrintJobManager Jobs (even for subscribers not currently using tFLOW). All associated files for a particular job can live in one place, eliminating the need to locate them across storage servers or cloud platforms.

Midcomp Azero Announces New Large Format Plotter Range

Midcomp Azero has announced the availability of the new HP DesignJet range, including the HP DesignJet T200, T600 and Studio series. The HP DesignJet T200, T600 and Studio series are intuitive and easy to print with, so that architects, engineers and construction professionals can focus on what is important.

The HP DesignJet Studio Printer series and the HP DesignJet T600 Printer series are the only solutions providing seamless printing of both large and small format sheets automatically in a multi-size print basket compared to competitive alternatives with comparable size and features as of January, 2020.

The increase in demand for different workspaces forces us to search for ways to meet space requirements and adhere to budgets. The HP DesignJet T200, T600 and Studio series are the world’s smallest plotters designed with sustainability in mind.

HP DesignJet T200, T600 and Studio series printers are up to 38% smaller compared to competitive alternatives with comparable size and features as of January, 2020. They are also the world’s smallest large format plotters based on the most compact footprint.

Architects, engineers and construction professionals spend a lot of time outside the office, between construction sites, offices and external presentations. This requires tools that can bring the freedom to work remotely and securely, as simply as possible.

HP is reducing the carbon footprint of printing through carbon reduction initiatives such as energy efficiency, reduced packaging and use of recycled plastics. The HP DesignJet Studio Printer is the first HP DesignJet where HP has offset the remaining carbon impact due to raw material extraction and processing, printer manufacturing and transportation, as well as electricity, paper and cartridge use in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol.

‘What is unique to the South African market is that a large number of architect and engineering practices have seen downscaling and office spaces were vacated to run with a smaller staff complement from their homes. Normally, there would be one or two of these printers at the office in a print room,’ said Mariana Raath, General Manager, Midcomp Azero.

‘Now there is still the requirement to print (as prints needs to be submitted to municipalities/local government as well as to the project managers on the sites doing the actual work). However, these often large, heavy and high capacity printers now need to be ‘replaced’ by much lighter printers with a smaller footprint that will not only fit into the home area of the users, but also look attractive among their home furniture or ‘blend’ in (which the new design allows). More importantly these units need to be shared by multiple team members. The new printers are light enough to be carried and transported in an ordinary passenger vehicle to the next user’s house.’

Raath also mentioned the machines’ easier user interface, which is similar to a cellphone, and has been designed for users that never needed to interface with a printer before, to make them more comfortable with the technology. ‘The Plug&Play system is more advanced, and Wi-Fi can be used to print to these printers.’

HP DesignJet T200 series

– Available in 60.96cm (24”).
– Up to 30 second A1 print speed.
– 512MB of internal memory.
– Stand accessory.
– Roll cover accessory.
– Automatic sheet feeder accessory.

HP DesignJet T600 series

– Available in 60.96cm (24”) and 91.44 (36”).
– Up to 25 second A1 print speed.
– 1G of internal memory.
– Stand included.
– Roll cover included.
– Automatic sheet feeder included.

HP DesignJet Studio series

– Available in 60.96cm (24”) and 91.44 (36”).
– Up to 25 second A1 print speed.
– First net carbon neutral HP DesignJet plotter.
– New aesthetics with high tech look and feel.
– 1G of internal memory.
– Stand included.
– Roll cover included.
– Automatic sheet feeder included.

In terms of additional markets the machines can open for users, Raath said, ‘The printer can be used for technical drawings as well as to print a sheet that has a paper doll with an entire wardrobe for cut-outs printed on it; the scene of an Avengers’ show-down, customised gift wrap, or school notices – the market is endless.’
