With PreCut Center, Zünd is launching software that facilitates cut-file preparation for applications involving unprinted materials. Fully nested cut files can be prepared in a few simple steps. The software significantly reduces the workload in file preparation, generates optimal material yield and eliminates the potential for error.

PreCut Center simplifies file preparation and output and lets the user select a level of automation based on individual production requirements. All it takes is a few simple steps to create a fully nested file. Whether users prefer a manual or automated process, the software allows for selecting the workflow that makes the most sense for a given production scenario.

After importing the desired shapes PreCut Center, the user assigns them to the corresponding recipes. Recipes are basically road maps for creating cut paths based on specific parameters. The recipes can be imported or created as needed by the user. The next step entails defining materials and material parameters. The shapes are subsequently nested on the unprinted material. This process results in optimal material yield with minimal waste and reduced production time.

In addition, PreCut Center also lets the user integrate selected metadata. Information printed along with the job facilitates job tracking and, once cutting is complete, enables quick and accurate attribution of cut parts to corresponding orders.

PreCut Center is available in two versions: Basic and Pro. Users can select the version and associated features according to their needs. Zünd PreCut Center’s open architecture permits importing cut shapes and data from multiple sources. PreCut Center Pro provides fully automated nesting capabilities at the push of a button and lets users individually edit nested layouts and cut paths. In a last step, Zünd PreCut Center generates a cut file in .zcc format and makes it available for subsequent import into Zünd Cut Center. An option also exists for outputting files in .dxf format.

Create An Ideal Service Culture In Nine Steps

In order to distinguish you and your business from your competitors, John Tschohl, president and founder of the Service Quality Institute said it is imperative that you create a service culture that runs throughout your company, from frontline employees to the CEO.

Never has customer service been as critical as it is today. That became apparent during the pandemic, when millions of people around the globe relied on businesses that could provide what they needed to survive — personally and professionally — and as quickly as possible.

Tschohl has developed the ‘nine principles of creating a service culture.’ A service culture, he said, focuses on doing whatever it takes to satisfy the customer in order to attract new customers and retain current customers.

To create a service culture, you must take the following steps:

1. Create a relentless strategy. This is a lifetime commitment to customer service. ‘It is a propulsive, self-directed passion to continue to learn, improve and exceed expectations in everything you do,’ Tschohl said. ‘You have to be relentless in serving your customers; it has to be a way of life.’

2. Reduce friction. ‘Remove stupid rules, policies and procedures,’ Tschohl said. Most rules are put in place to prevent customers from ‘taking advantage’ of a company, he added. What most managers and executives do not understand is that those rules actually reduce the chance a customer will do business with you. Advertising and prices might get customers through the doors of your business once, but if they have a problem with a product or service — and if your rules do not allow you to quickly solve it for them — they will not be back. Make it easy for customers to do business with you.

3. Empower employees. ‘Empowerment is the backbone of great service,’ Tschohl said. ‘Everyone must be empowered.’ If a frontline employee — your most important employee — does not have the power to satisfy a customer on the spot, and to the customer’s satisfaction, that customer will be forced to do one of two things: move his/her complaint up the ladder, often all the way to the CEO, which costs a lot in terms of time and money, or he/she will simply never do business with you again.

4. Do everything with speed. ‘People today expect and want speed. You must drastically reduce the time for everything you do.’ That includes everything from answering the phone within the first ring or two to meeting or exceeding the deadline for a customer’s project. If something normally takes three weeks, do it in two. If you say you’ll get back to a customer within a week, do it within days. To focus on speed, all employees must organise, prioritise, manage their time and look for efficiencies.

5. Train your employees. ‘Employees at every level of your business must be trained on customer service every few months,’ Tschohl said. Ninety nine percent of customer interaction takes place with your frontline employees and yet they are the least trained, least empowered and least valued. When you spend the time and money to train your employees, and do it continuously, you will realise a return on that investment that will drive your business to new heights.

6. Remember customers’ names. ‘The most precious things customers have are their names. Our names are precious to us. Call your customers by name whenever you interact with them.’ Doing so lets the customer know that you value them and their business, that you acknowledge and respect them and that they are important to you.

7. Practice service recovery. ‘When you make a mistake, admit it and do whatever it takes to correct it,’ Tschohl said. ‘All employees must practise the four skills of service recovery: act quickly, take responsibility, make an empowered decision and compensate fairly.

8. Reduce costs. ‘Price is critical to all customers,’ Tschohl said. ‘Service leaders are frugal and are always looking for ways to reduce costs. My research shows that service leaders are aggressive at eliminating waste and costs.’ When you reduce costs, you improve your bottom line. To realise even greater benefits, pass at least a portion of those savings on to your customers. It will give you an edge over your competitors.

9. Measure results. ‘In order to keep management passionate about the process of creating a service culture and the financial investment and time required to do so, you must measure the results of your efforts,’ Tschohl said. It is critical that you know where you came from and where you are now. When you can prove that what you are doing is having a positive impact, you will gain support throughout the company. ‘Serving the customer builds the bottom line and long-term growth prospects of an organisation,’ Tschohl said.

Zünd Announces Monitoring Tool To Optimise Digital Cutting

High machine availability and productivity are essential for profitable cutting and finishing. As simple as this may sound, it is no small thing in the day-to-day production environment. Where do the relevant key performance indicators come from? This is where Zünd Connect comes in.

The web-based monitoring tool gives the user access to cutter performance data at a glance, any time of day. Reliable key performance indicators are available at all times to help users maximise productivity. The system records productivity levels over a freely definable period using Zünd Cut Center – (ZCC Version 3.4 or later) as a data source. Data monitoring provides information users need in order to make informed decisions.

This comprehensive overview of production data reveals connections that are often overlooked. Zünd Connect supplies valuable key performance indicators for assessing how efficiently cutting systems are working. To be able to improve cutter efficiency, potential areas of improvement must be uncovered and recognised. This potential lies primarily in the technology but also in the way it is being used.

Zünd Connect consists of multiple dashboards with specific options for evaluating data:

Overview: this dashboard provides past production data and indicates, for example, fluctuations in machine utilisation. The user can select various views and switch between indices for overall equipment effectiveness (OEE), availability and capacity. In addition, a filter function can be used to compare performance across different shifts.

Job list: this shows a list of processed jobs, what they entailed, the time it took to produce them and the cutting distance travelled per job. Diagrams show the time spent by each individual material/substrate, processing method, tool and module. In reference to materials, for example, bar graphs show the processing time for each material used during a specified time frame.

Loss detection: this view visualises losses in terms of time. It shows, for example, when process interruptions tend to occur most often. Loss detection enables the user to evaluate factors such as the specific time frames, materials or tools most likely to be associated with interruptions.

Interruption statistics: this lists the reasons for such interruptions. The user can filter for time of day, material, method, tool or module. The statistical representation shows the user how many hours the cutters were unable to produce during a specified period because of machine interruptions.

Using Zünd Connect, the user can see at a glance when and, more importantly, why machine interruptions occur, how much time is spent in set-up, and what the availability of each machine is.

Zünd Connect is available in a ‘Monitor’ or an ‘Analyzer’ version. As the name suggests, Monitor consists of a graphical display of overall equipment effectiveness and is available to all ZCC users for free. Analyzer, on the other hand, makes it possible to perform subsequent analysis and pinpoint productivity losses. Analyzer provides the necessary tools for the user to be able to evaluate the production process.

EFI Launch New Digital Textile Printer

The HYPER printer is powered by EFI Reggiani genuine inks, with high-quality formulas developed to ensure the best performance in terms of runnability and longer printhead life while producing astonishing colour depth and brightness, as well as ideal fastness properties.

It is the launch of the company’s third new digital textile printer of 2021, delivering the world’s highest real production throughput for a scanning digital textile printer. The EFI Reggiani HYPER is a scanning printer available in 1.8 metre, 2.4 metre or 3.4 metre widths.

With an up to eight-colour configuration, the Reggiani HYPER prints at up to 13 linear metres per minute in two-pass production mode, making it the fastest textile scanning printer on the market. Drytac Films And Laminates Used In Walkway Project


Canadian full-service graphics production and installation company, Premier Graphics, was selected to produce and install graphics for a project. As a long-term customer of Drytac, the company chose to work with the Drytac’s films and laminates throughout the project.

Premier Graphics recently used the range of films and laminates from Drytac, supplied by ND Graphics, to produce a series of stunning and colourful graphics for an innovative project at the Cambie Street Bridge in Vancouver.

The project brought to life a vision by artist Jessica Angel, who came up with the clever idea of mixing colourful graphics with augmented reality (AR) to ‘extend’ the Cambie Street Bridge into a 1765sqm (19,000 square foot) public art installation for the Vancouver Biennale exhibition.

Angel’s design featured a huge, two-dimensional vinyl mural that wrapped the pedestrian walkway, supporting columns and underside of the bridge, turning what is usually a relatively dull structure into an eye-catching piece of art.

However, AR took this a step further, with passers-by encouraged to download the Vancouver Biennale app for free and hold up their phone while walking through the walkway. Doing this opened up a whole new dimension, transforming parts of the installation.

The company selected Drytac Polar Grip white polymeric self-adhesive film for the printed film parts of the installation, as well as Drytac Interlam Pro Emerytex PVC overlaminating film for the floor graphics and Drytac Interlam Pro Matte pressure sensitive overlaminating film for the pillars and ceiling. All the graphics were printed on the company’s HP Latex R1000 Plus.

‘The process consisted of the testing of many materials, and of course balancing a budget that was already stretched thin,’ said Taylor Sellinger, Partner and General Manager of Premier Graphics. ‘We needed to fit the client’s budget with a material that was likely to last 18-24 months and meet the slip-resistance requirements for the safety of the public.’

Sellinger said Premier Graphics selected Drytac materials as they were familiar with the products, having worked with the company’s films for several years. Moreover, the Drytac solutions also performed best in preliminary tests.

‘We find Drytac films to be consistent in quality and the variety of adhesive types and styles make them a very diverse material,’ Sellinger said. ‘Since the majority of this installation surface was relatively flat, we didn’t require a cast film to conform, but the nature of the adhesive on the Polar Grip film made it an ideal choice for great adhesion to a rough and unfinished concrete.’

The new system also breaks new creative boundaries with several features developed to enhance image quality, such as the MFD2 (half-toning) processing functionality to further control dot position. The result of this increased control is sharper edges and finer lines as well as fewer colour irregularities.

The UJF-7151plus II’s six-colour configuration includes light cyan and light magenta to enable more accurate colour reproduction and it can achieve 1800dpi image resolution, providing superior definition for high-quality applications. In addition, the new printer’s innovative Colour Gloss functionality adds a glossy finish to hardened colour inks, enabling users to create new, distinguishing textures and details that ensure their products stand out from the crowd even without the use of clear varnish.

Load capacity has also been increased to 30kg, making the printer capable of handling high quality print jigs and ideal for accurate printing of heavy media, such as wood, metal, and glass, in industrial print environments.

UJF-MkII e series 

The brand-new series of UJF-MkII e printers sees the introduction of the UJF-3042MkII e, the UJF-6042MkII e and the UJF-3042MkII Ex e to the already comprehensive Mimaki portfolio. The three new models offer cutting-edge image quality and stability for printing onto an extensive variety of soft and hard media, including leather, wood, acrylic, metal and glass.

The UJF-3042MkII e and UJF-3042MkII Ex e feature a print area of 300mm x 420mm, while the UJF-6042MkII e offers a larger print size of 610mm x 420mm. All UJF-MkII e Series printers feature new MFD2 processing for exceptional image quality as well as an improved gap check sensor. This laser sensor detects media placement to prevent printheads from making contact with the material during printing. It can even detect transparent materials for superior accuracy and highly controlled media detection. In addition, the new printers provide improved usability to the operator by adding visual guidance on the 8.7cm full colour display.

Cutting-edge, performance enhancing features included in all four new UJF printers

The new additions for the UJF printer series all feature Mimaki Device Language (MDL) commands support, which enables automated workpiece transfer. This capability allows users to control the new UJF printers from external production systems and peripheral devices. This enhanced automation not only increases user control and productivity but reduces manual operator intervention to increase efficiencies.

The new models also incorporate RasterLink7 as standard RIP software, supporting one-product-at-a-time printing. With this latest software platform, numbering and variable data printing has never been easier, providing users with significant time and production efficiencies.

All new UJF Series UV inks are GREENGUARD GOLD certified and the new range of printers incorporate the proprietary Mimaki Core Technologies, including Nozzle Check Unit, a function that automatically detects the status of nozzles using the sensor and performs auto cleaning when a missing nozzle is found.

Optional for ‘UJF-3042MkII e’, Nozzle Recovery System is a function that automatically replaces defective nozzles with other nozzles if there is a problem left unsolved by the nozzle cleaning, and ensures uninterrupted printing with stable image quality. Mimaki Advanced Pass System4 is a function that prints pass boundaries fading in gradation to reduce banding (horizontal stripes), uneven colour and glossy streak.
